XBIT v2.1 Release Announcement by Chengye Mao
 email: chengye@bellsouth.net
 Oct. 24, 1999

I am pleased to announce the release of XBIT v2.1,
an extension of Tcl and Tk for image acquisition,
 processing, presentation and production. Documents
and an evaluation package of XBIT are available at
 http://www.geocities.com/~chengye/soft.html

This release is the XBIT v2.1, an update of XBIT v2.0.
 The changes include:

 1) Updated XBIT for Tcl8.2.1 for Windows and Linux PC platform
(RedHat 6.0 i386) to reflect the changes of Tcl8.2.1

 2) Changed menu buttons to menu bars for XBit's console,
view, and tedit programs (XBit80&+ for Tcl80&+); updated menu
button GUI (XBit76 for Tcl76p2). Improved coding in console's
stdio implementation for handling standard I/O streams in
    a local DLL.

 3) Completed a comb-widget: popup and its documentation.
A popup widget is a non-decorated toplevel widget, and can be
used to popup a transient window containing other
widgets. It can be used for popping up embedded information
about a GUI component and for displaying a desktop image.

 4) Added a new function comb.proc to retrieve scripts of a Tcl
    procedure.

 5) Added a SPY utility for automatically adding and removing
spying code into selected Tcl procedure scripts in memory for
efficient code debug (see doc "proc").

 6) Added GUIs into View program for saving image into
disk files (saving a gimg, a canvas image and a mask image
of a View program). Supported output formats include jpeg, tiff,
DIB, and all Tk Photo's output images.

 7) Updated XBit's demo to reflect applications of the newly
    released popup widget.

 8) Some minor bug fixes in XBit2.0's script libraries.

 The updated DLLs include xbit76e.zip, xbit80e.zip, xbit81e.zip
 and xbit82e.zip for tcl7.6, 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2.1 respectively.
Other updated files include xbitlib.zip and xbitdoc.zip.

 Acknowledges
XBIT is based on Tcl/Tk. The author is grateful to Scriptics
Corporation and Tcl community for their efforts in developing
and supporting Tcl/Tk. Reading and writing JPEG images are
handled with the library routines developed by the Independent
JPEG group. Reading and writing TKPHOTO images are benefited
from the Tk photo originally written by Paul Mackerras,
as well as its Img extension written by Jan Nijtmans. Utilities
for compressing and decompressing scripts have used the zlib
library written by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Edler.
