Subject: UPDATE: Tcl/Tk 8.4 Development - DN [1]

Eric Melski <ericm@pop.ajubasolutions.com> - 20 Jun 2000 - comp.lang.tcl

The past week was fairly exciting as far as core development goes.
Several people have volunteered for projects on the 8.4 roadmap. Some of
those, such as completing mingw support (Jan and Mo), have already been
completed; patches have been submitted and applied to the sources in the
CVS repository. Other projects, like the [trace commmand] modifications
(Vince) and localization of Tk dialogs (Laurent and many others), are
 progressing well.

I have fleshed out parts of the roadmap with links to relevant bug and RFE
reports for some features, and links to homepages for projects, when
available. The roadmap will surely become more detailed and annotated as
development continues. In addition, a new web page, "Contributing to the
 Tcl/Tk Core" is online at:

 http://dev.scriptics.com/software/tcltk/contributing.html

This page lists some ways that community members can contribute to core
development, and includes a description of what information to include in
a bug report to make it a really great bug report, and what things to
include in a core patch to make it a truly top-notch patch. A link to
this page is on the 8.4 roadmap as well.

Some concerns about the complexity ratings for some features on the
roadmap have been raised. Keep in mind that these ratings are somewhat
"off-the-cuff", so you shouldn't let a high complexity rating stop you
from making an attempt at a project. Even if you start something and get
overwhelmed, your efforts will help the development effort in the end. I
encourage everybody to choose a project that they think is interesting and
see what they can do with it. Contact tclcore@ajubasolutions.com if you
need more information about a particular project than what is presently in
 the roadmap.

The response from everybody has been very good so far, but there are still
a lot of projects without owners, which means plenty of work yet to be
done. If we are going to make Tcl/Tk 8.4 a really huge success, everybody
will have to help out. I look forward to hearing from more volunteers in
 the coming weeks.

Look for periodic status updates like this throughout the 8.4 development
 cycle.

Keep up the good work, everybody!
