Subject: raw image display - ideas? - DN [1]

 Hello,

I'd like your opinions on how easy/difficult it would be to
build an image-visualisation application that would:

 - read in raw (no headers, just values) images of say,
float or short int values and display the image
 - basic zooming
 - mouse-click value extraction for individual pixels
 ** multi-platform compatibility ** (LINUX, UNIX, WINDOWS 98-2000)

In other words your basic image display program for non-standard
images (*not* JPEG, GIF, BMP etc.). Converting existing files to
standard formats is not practical since files that we use here
are typically 100 to 500 Megs and we don't want too many
 copies!

The 'image' command seems only to do standard formats, and while
the C-interface provides flexibility I'm imagining (without having
looked too deeply into it) that this would fly against the platform
compatibility requirement. The whole C-interface is about
writing C-programs, isn't it? I'm hoping it's possible to have some
sort of tcl-tk executable that I could just transport between platforms.

Can anybody give me their off-the-top-of-their-heads ideas
on whether tcl-tk can do this, and if so, give me a hint or two
on where to look for documentation, what commands are involved,
 etc.?

 Thanks a lot people, Adrian
