Subject: Q Network management with Tcl/Tk - DN [1]

mitiste@charlie.iit.edu - 13 Mar 2000 - comp.lang.tcl

     1. Cameron - please - or somebody else - any pointers on the
'Net for Tcl/Tk usage for network management, with some meaningful
samples of real life implementation? I said Cameron first, as I tried
 accessing the:
 http://starbase.neosoft.com/~claird/comp.dcom.net-management/notyet
 w/out much success :-(

     2. Anybody - any opinions on Zeltserman & Puoplo's book:
"Building Network Management Tools with Tcl/Tk" ?

     3. I have used MRTG for quite awhile now, without much
customization, though ... is Tcl/Tk w/Scotty a better option in
getting more customized data (multiple MIBs collected on the same
graph, links from within the graphs, ...)?

     4. [OT from the announced title] Anybody having attended the
Scriptics Tcl/Tk training? I am thinking of taking a vacation just to
be able to get to one of their sessions ... would that be worth it in
regards to getting some network management w/Tcl/Tk ideas? I feel very
comfortable with any type of programming (havig had gone through Lisp,
C, C++), but I am newbie in terms of syntax and capabilities knowledge
when it comes to either Tcl/Tk or Perl (why did I even mention Perl
here ?!?), thus not really sure what level I should start with when
approaching Tcl/Tk ... it's something like the "C++" gurus, who advise
you - when starting with this language - to just "unlearn" "C" first
... would that be the same with Tcl/Tk?

     TIA,
     Stef
