i ran up against this too, but did not go to the trouble of tracking
it down.  thanks, steve!

our solution was to build our compute cluster out of linux boxes.  for
whatever reason, we have no trouble building metakit files over nfs,
while windows-to-windows does not work.  our first, small-scale,
cluster using people's desktop windows boxes created the file locally,
then copied it to the server!  not elegant.
